During this weeks content I became intrigued with the systems theory. My favorite reading for this week was from Carrillo-Rowe because it went more in depth about theory. Theory is interesting to me because there are so many different ways to describe it. While reading I found this quote quite interesting "And the theory we create allows us to live in new and more just ways." (Carrillo-Rowe, 15) This was interesting to me because we as society must create and use new theories to improve our world. Many reforms start by the population coming together for a certain goal which is what I related to most when reading this article.
We all have a duty to examine the different connections between life and theory as Carrillo-Rowe taught us through this article. It is important to look at the relations that surround not only yourself but also your community. They say the most important part of a plant is the roots and I like to use that as a comparison to political parties, justice departments, and social reforms. I think theory is a very interesting topic and I hope to learn more about it in class.
Hey Zach,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about reforms starting from the ground up. It really is almost impossible to get anywhere without a team and real passion. I also like what you said about a plant and its roots. It can sometimes be difficult for us to look at an organization, party, or even a concept and not just think of the poster-people; the main person or people that come to mind first because they're the most popular. Whether it is a set of ideas, laws, beliefs, or humans, there is always more than just the tip of the iceberg; or in your case, the pretty flowers. My critical question is,
How can we use outreach to shine light on the lesser-known parts of organizational structures? Are symbols (George Floyd during 2020-21 BLM protests, Donald Trump as a symbol of modern alt-right republicanism) helpful or hurtful during times of change?
I also really enjoyed this article because it makes you really reflect on what systems we're apart of and how they shape our perspectives and give us certain privileges or disadvantages. When we think about belonging to a certain religious group or political party for example, those give us certain affordances and reputations that influence the way we see the world. Therefore like you said, it's interesting and super important to pay attention to how these theories or in this case ideologies shape our lives.
